THE BLACK RIDER

Stadttheater INgolstadt

Robert Wilson's retelling of the folk-opera Freischütz, about a devil's pact and its devastating consequences, with music by Tom Waits and lyrics by William S. Burroughs.

The seemingly simple story of a young man who must prove himself a hunter in order to marry his love - but is hopelessly incapable of firing a weapon. Deciding instead for the easy way out, he makes a deal with the devil and loses everything along the way. Blood feuds, forest creatures, and family curses are the norm in this dark fable of love and loss. The musical production opened the 2019 season on the main stage in Ingolstadt.

“Brian Bell's grandiose production of the musical 'The Black Rider' has gotten the season at the Ingolstadt City Theater off to a great start. With a phenomenal Péter Polgár in the title role, an equally phenomenal ensemble and standing ovations  . . . the latest production has the makings of an audience hit. Because you can't get the music out of your ears. Because the images are breathtaking. Because the band sounds so weird, sweet, dramatic, daring. Because the actors all play divinely and sing like the devil.”
