King lear

Shakespeare company berlin

The story of a world in flux: wars rage outside and uncertainty scratches at every door . . . our acting troupe arrives and sets up its stage to tell a story: of  pride, madness, and annihilation.

In our outdoor summer production, a versatile company of six actors brings the entire Lear-Cosmos to life, in a radically re-imagined version of Shakespeare's mightiest play. In the whirlwind of dissolution wrought upon the characters, there is a seed of hope and renewal: "Thy life is a miracle."

This production of King Lear opened the twenty-fifth anniversary season of the Shakespeare Company Berlin 2024.

“And the highest praise goes to the director, who managed to streamline the extensive play into a concise plot without losing any of its essence.”"

-Bärbel Knill, Landsberger Tagesblatt, 01.02.25

“Bell shows this conflict above all with double casting:  Kim Pfeiffer as Cordelia and Edmund – good and evil. A second double casting is Johanna-Julia Spitzer as the Fool and as Kent. Bell gives this double role a special status: in the framework he has set for the play, the ensemble often addresses the audience directly. Among other things, with the appeal ”Ripeness is all." A small trick of the direction, but a big vote for humor—and thus for humanity. The audience at the Stadttheater gave enthusiastic and prolonged applause."
